7 Tips for starting off the school year right

For high schoolers the celebration ends when the school year begins.

To make life easier we have prepared these 7 Tips for high schoolers:

  1. Grades are a subjective measure of knowledge. They can be based on test results, in class projects, homework and class participation. The weight each of these carries will differ from class to class, teacher to teacher. Get to know what each of your instructors value and how they base their grades.
  2. Behaving well. Your behaviour during lessons makes life much easier after they are over. Listening attentively to the teacher will prevent problems related to how you are viewed as a person while in class.
  3. Asking questions when you don’t understand something is a must. Do not allow gaps in knowledge: ask teachers, parents, classmates, who may know the answers to questions related to learning.
  4. Friendship. It is important to be open to friendship and communication. A communicative person will never be alone: in any team, there will be someone with whom you can talk to about your struggles and missed assignments. It’s always good to have someone on your side.
  5. Talk to your parents. It is necessary to share joys and problems with parents. Your Dad or Mom will navigate the sometimes treacherous waters of high school life. Yeah, they’re older, but that means they can bring a lot of experience to the table.
  6. Bullying. Humiliation and bullying is not, not even if the teacher does it. It is necessary to admit one’s guilt, but one should not forget about self-esteem. Parents should know about the incident and they will tell you what to do. It is important to remember: if you want respect for yourself you have to treat other people accordingly.
  7. Fight boredom. School is not a boring place. At the same time you’re studying there is ample time to socialize. Making new friends, playing around during breaks, preparing for holidays, etc. Can make school interesting and fun.

Every pupil should remember that their parents love them and are ready to offer support. Hiding problems from mom and dad is impossible. And most will be extra understanding and want to help you out if they can. But don’t spring any last minute surprises on them and you’ll do alright.

Tips for organizing your study area at home

Let’s face it, homework is a big part of school life and if you don’t have an area to study and do your homework, then you’re going to end struggling to learn and remember and excel at the art and science of doing homework. That’s why some of the smart kids will stay after school to finish up their homework before they even go home.

Some of us don’t have a quiet home life. Or we share a room with a noisy sibling. So, instead of fighting an unwinnable fight, be smart and complete your home work at school.

And even if you do have a nice quiet place to study, remember that if you are organized and consistent, you won’t waste time looking for a pencil, or trying to find your laptop charger.

If you have a desk, use it. If you find yourself being distracted, take a second to get a glass of water or take a quick 5 minute breather. Then get back at refreshed and motivated to succeed.

Study smarter.

Helpful tips for successful high schoolers:

  • Start your homework with difficult topics and subjects first, then move on to the easier projects.
  • Before a test, repeat what you have learned, “refreshing” your memory;
  • When writing essays or reports, be sure to double and triple check your spelling and grammar. Read it out loud, if it’s hard to say it, then it’s probably going to be hard to read as well.
  • Reward yourself for meeting certain milestones. If you need to read 20 pages, then at page 10 give your self a treat. It can whatever brings a smile to your face, whether a peice of candy, or listening to your favorite song. Then get right back on task and reward yourself for the next milestone.
  • Learning a foreign language? Try reading aloud, focus on correct pronunciation, watch movies in your target language, first with subtitle, then turn them off and listen to how the words sound, how they are pronounced and accented and how they make you feel.
  • Rotate workloads: read a book on history after doing math and then start a chemistry assignment; the next time start with math and move on to the reading assignment and them chemistry. After a while you’ll discover that you are more production and your mind is more primed to learning. 
  • Find a study partner. Do homework with classmates who know a particular subject well. The mutual exchange of knowledge will help you to prepare better for your lessons and come in handy for tests, exams, and quizzes;
  • Find time to relax and socialize with friends. The brain gets tired and it needs unloading, otherwise, classes will be ineffective and the material learned will be forgotten at the most inopportune time.
